A Novel System for Electronically Confirming Adherence to Tuberculosis Therapy
Kit Yee Au-Yeung, PhD, Senior Clinical Scientist, Proteus Biomedical, Inc.
Poor adherence during oral tuberculosis treatment leads to treatment failure and drug-resistance. Directly observed therapy confirms therapy, but is resource-intensive and time-consuming. Proteus Biomedical uses an edible sensor and small detector worn on the torso as a novel approach to improve outcomes. When ingested, the edible sensor is energized by gastric fluid and communicates its unique information to the detector. The detector interprets the information, and then documents the ingestion event with corresponding date and time. In the study, a novel system was found to have high-sensitivity and specificity when compared to DOT for confirming adherence. With enhancements including edible sensor integration with medications, patient-directed data sharing with caregivers and providers, and incorporation of patient-selected behavioral support tools, such a system may provide an attractive and less burdensome alternative to DOT.
