The growing use of radio frequency identification (RFID) systems in healthcare settings requires attention to the possibility of adverse electromagnetic (EM) environmental effects with medical devices that are likely to be found there. Adverse electromagnetic environmental effects include the undesired responses of the medical devices to the environments in which they must function. Due to recent conflicting reports, the potential for compromise of medical device performance by RFID / RTLS is being questioned and there has been a call for specific EM interference (EMI) test protocols to be developed. RFID vendors, medical device manufacturers, and laboratories need to work together to define a testing strategy that is appropriate, thorough, and defined in a verifiable, repeatable manner. EMI is a very timely topic at many healthcare facilities as well as at the FDA and the FCC.
