Seminar 1—Health & Wellness Industry Trends
Part A) Building a Successful Business Case for Driving Health Engagement
Boehringer Ingelheim (BI) is a family-owned, global pharmaceutical company with a long heritage of doing the right thing for its patients, its community and its employees. With data showing that employee lifestyle choices were driving up healthcare costs and impacting absence and productivity, U.S. benefits leadership wanted to convince senior management to champion and invest in creating a culture of health. Their solution: a business case identifying the impact of health care issues on productivity and costs.

Key elements include:
  • Financial ROI, including cost trend, absence, productivity and presenteeism
  • Behavioral risk factors and the opportunity presented by preventable or modifiable conditions
  • The company's mission, brand credibility and link to market capability and competitiveness
  • A company-wide "culture of health" brand and message

The resulting business case won the CEO's unequivocal support and endorsement that investing in the health of employees and their families is paramount to continuing organization profitability and consistent with the company's commitment to improving people's lives. This session will highlight Boehringer Ingelheim's journey to create a business case for all of its U.S. operating companies, gain an acceptance and understanding of the importance of this initiative, secure agreement on a new direction and culture change, and ensure CEO championing for the action plan.
