Standardization of Healthcare Quality
Metrics — An Industry Debate
In an era of healthcare cost escalation, employers and
public purchasers are increasingly demanding
transparency in healthcare costs and quality. Specifically,
pay-for-performance strategies potentially allow
purchasers to distinguish quality among healthcare
providers. However, there is little consensus on who
defines the measures, which measures are meaningful
and rigorous and whether implementing systems to
track these quality measures is too onerous for
providers. Key stakeholders discuss the pros and cons of
standardization of quality metrics and its implications
on provider accountability.
