The Robotic Life Group at the MIT Media Lab is interested in designing robots that appear intelligent and capable in their interactions with humans (and each other), who are able to cooperate with people as capable partners, who are able to learn quickly and effectively from natural human instruction, and who are intuitive to communicate with and engaging for humans to interact with. Two recent robotic platforms, the Huggable and a sociable robot system for weight loss, currently in development in the group are related to health care applications. The Huggable: Numerous studies have shown the positive benefits of companion animal therapy. Unfortunately, companion animals are not always available. The Huggable is new type of robotic companion, inspired by pet therapy applications, being designed for such cases. It features a full body sensitive skin for relational affective touch, silent, back-drivable actuators, vision and auditory sensory systems, an embedded PC with data collection and networking capabilities. The goal of the Huggable robot is to function as a team member which works with the hospital or nursing home staff and the patient or resident of the facility to promote the overall well being of that individual.
Sociable Robot System for Weight loss: We are building a robotic weight loss companion to help people who are trying to lose or keep off weight. Human-robot interaction work in recent years is helping us to create robots that can be engaging and helpful in their interactions with people. Work in weight loss and maintenance shows that long-term dietary success is correlated with better tracking of diet-related information such as calories consumed and exercise amount. Our system addresses this problem by creating a robot that encourages ongoing interaction with a user by helping track dietary information, giving feedback and advice to the user, and connecting them with members of their existing social support network.
