With 30 years of experience merging health, human services and housing, Nick Macchione serves as San Diego County’s Director of the Health and Human Services Agency. Macchione improves the lives of approximately 1.3 million, or one in three San Diegans. Leading a workforce of 6,400 county and 7,000 contracted employees with a $2 billion annual budget, including 186 citizen advisory boards/commissions with over 500 contracted community service providers, Macchione is at the forefront of a paradigm shift transforming how government influences public welfare. As the architect and strategist of “Live Well San Diego,” Macchione is championing a transformative, social movement for prevention, wellness and whole person care. Considered a strategic and visionary leader of systems-wide solutions, Macchione has helped develop this ambitious vision for population health and social wellness. Since its inception in 2010, Macchione continues to champion efforts along with hundreds of diverse partners including governments, schools, businesses, faith-based and communities to collectively unify a region where everyone can be healthy, safe and thriving!
The Agency is one of the largest, integrated health and human services networks in the nation and has earned numerous national accolades for its highly innovative and cost effective solutions in improving the health, safety and well-being among residents across the region. In his role, Macchione manages the day-to-day operations of major departments of which include: Public Health, Behavioral Health, Inpatient Medical Care (109-licensed bed acute-care Psychiatric Hospital and 192-licensed bed sub-acute care Edgemoor Hospital - which in October 2017 won Gold for Baldrige Award for Performance Excellence), Public Assistance Services, Child Welfare Services, Aging & Independence Services, Public Guardian & Public Administrator, Early Childhood Development Services and the Executive Office (finance, operations, human resources, compliance, strategy, information technology, legislative affairs, media and contracts). Specific client services include: public health for the entire county, behavioral health for 70,000 clients, inpatient medical care for over 192 patients, and an extensive Medicaid managed care network for 975,000 lives including major safety net programs to increase access to health care for those without health insurance, as well as, managed the care of special health needs populations (developmentally disabled, severely physically disabled, and/or mentally ill).
Macchione holds Master’s degrees from Columbia University and NYU specializing in leadership, management and policy.
