For both new and established Physician Advisors, a common uncertainty amongst everyone is whether the job is being accomplished efficiently. This workshop helps Physician Advisors to define their role, better understand their responsibilities, and set the benchmarks for success.

• Identify the basic and vital responsibilities of a Physician Advisor and how to best achieve them
  • be a supportive member of the Utilization Management Committee
  • educate medical staff on rules and regulations set forth by the government that affect their jobs in a clinical setting
  • reduce length-of-stay and avoidable days
  • improve clinical documentation by education on ICD-10
  • appropriately manage hospital resources
• Determine what necessary annual achievements and monthly metrics should be met, including:
  • case mix index
  • readmission rates
  • number of inpatients converted to Code 44
  • number of clarifications from CDI requested and answered
  • avoidable days
  • RAC appeals and outcomes
  • percent of patients screened by the Case Management department within 24 hours
• Outline common benchmarks to measure success in the role, such as the number of:
  • cases to review per day or week
  • educational sessions to hold each month
  • hours to clock on rounds
• Communicate the role and responsibilities of the Physician Advisors to staff physicians
• Bridge the gaps between Administration, staff Physicians, IT, Finance, and Compliance
• Explore how to define roles and responsibilities to fit different hospitals for new Physician Advisors
• Meet other challenges in the role and “educate for next time”

Physician Advisors and Case Managers significantly impact readmission rates by reviewing discharge plans and ensuring appropriate post-acute transitions occur. This workshop focuses on ways to identify challenges before the transition, and foster partnerships to encourage positive and successful transitions.
