| With more than 400,000 preterm births per year; representing a 27% increase since 1982, preterm birth is a serious women’s health issue, costing the healthcare system $15 billion annually. With increased hospital admissions, longer LOS, NICU costs, increased office visits for mother and baby, lost days from work and decreased productivity, preterm birth is significantly impacting women, their health plans and employers. Effective and early identification of your at- risk population, clinical assessment with objective diagnostic tools and appropriate interventions for preterm labor, are key to improving outcomes and lowering costs. Health Plans and Employers can play a vital role in a Pregnancy Management Program for the 21st Century that includes education and risk assessment. |

| Initiatives around Regional Health Information Organizations (RHIOs) and State Health Information Exchanges (SHIE’s) are increasing in number and size each month. The challenge hasn’t been so much the “vision” as the execution. The advancements made within the healthcare payer industry around business intelligence, customer reporting, P4P, and consumer-directed health plan portals, all offer certain capabilities that can and should be leveraged in the execution plan of a health information exchange. SAS has been actively engaged throughout the industry in assisting plans to leverage intelligence platforms to not only meet the “first-generation RHIO” but to be positioned for the next-stage necessary to achieve the initial vision for the organization. The lessons learned within health plan reporting, consumer directed plan analysis, and customer intelligence can all contribute to a successful RHIO information layer. The attendee will learn about key stages that must be executed to facilitate later positioning for higher-end prediction, forecasting and quality outcomes reporting. |

Healthcare payer organizations are faced with the challenge of providing the highest quality of care to their members while controlling healthcare costs. Collaborations between healthcare constituents, patient, payer and provider, are gradually being accepted as a way to help with this effort. Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), which operates the Blue Cross Blue Shield plans of Illinois, Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma and covers over 11 million lives, has adopted a single technology platform across all four plans in order to aid in this type of collaboration.
This integrated total health management IT initiative is a collaboration of interoperability between the nation's fourth largest health insurer and a host of leading health information technology companies. Its platform allows for integrated clinical information to be shared between HCSC, its members and its provider base through member and provider portals. Using the single technology platform across all plans allows HCSC to apply a comprehensive set of clinical rules and treatment protocols to claims data, physician and hospital records, and self-reported patient information to improve the consistency of care given to its members. HCSC is also able to identify best-practice intervention and prevention opportunities which can help control costs.
Learning Objectives:
- Attendees will learn about the integrated total health management framework and the deployment of a single technology framework among the enterprise.
- Attendees will understand the philosophy associated with a collaborative approach to care management.
- Attendees will hear about anticipated results of the integration including increased healthcare quality and decreased healthcare costs.

Hear from world-renowned reproductive health pioneer Dr. Howard Jones and how he has dedicated his life to improving women’s health, assisting couples overcome infertility and helping women live healthier lives around the world. From the opening of the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine in 1978, over 2,700 in vitro fertilizations have been performed.
Session Overview:
Approximately one in six couples experience infertility, yet most self-insured employers do not provide adequate coverage for infertility diagnosis and treatment. The consequences for employers not having a defined fertility benefit can be more severe than if they had offered a benefit. Employees often seek treatment whether the employer offers the benefit or not and the risks associated with the employee going outside of an employer controlled benefit can be quite high, resulting in 1) loss of talent and human capital 2) reduction in employee productivity and most significantly and 3) financial costs due to high order multiple births and the resulting NICU stays in addition to other long term healthcare costs.
This session will explore multi-disciplinary perspectives from an employer, payer and physician who will examine practical benefit design options for
- Fertility programs – how ‘family friendly’ programs attract and retain valued employees
- Benefit Design – Fertility treatment medications and medical procedures
- Employer to Employee Communications – Achieving work/life balance through leadership and communication
Specifically, participants will learn about:
- Black & Decker's benefit design which incorporates fertility coverage and drug treatment/therapy options, including the cost of implementation and return on investment
- Connecticare's payer perspective on benefit design to improve clinical and financial outcomes (i.e. reducing the risk of multiple birth rates which lead to poor and costly outcomes)
- Dr. Howard Jones, founder of the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine which delivered the 1st in vitro baby in the U.S. (1981), will give his unique perspective on fertility coverage and benefit design options
