Function in the System
As vice president of Network Development and ACO Activities for EMHS, Michael Donahue, MBA is responsible for the systems’ preparedness for healthcare reform. He engages EMHS provider groups and other healthcare professionals, regulatory agencies, payers and employers in designing consumer directed services for the future. Mike is the executive chair of Beacon Health, LLC, the organizational model which will support the EMHS’ designation as a Pioneer Accountable Care Organization.

The road to here
Mike received his undergraduate degree in Business Administration from the University of Maine, and his Master’s degree in Business Administration from Southern New Hampshire University.
With his past experience in practice management, Mike began his career in 2003 at Eastern Maine Medical Center as administrator of Physician Practices. In 2008 he became vice president of physician practices at EMMC. In this role he worked to expand EMMC’s physician practices, and grow the medical center’s primary and specialty care practices. In February of 2012 he became the vice president of Network Development and ACO Activities at EMHS bringing with him an array of experience that serves EMHS well in its role as a Pioneer Accountable Care organization.

Proudest accomplishments
Implementation of electronic medical records (EMR), Disease Registries, and NCQA recognition for all eligible practices, both specialty and primary care. In conjunction with the ACO leadership team, building a core leadership structure for EMHS population health activities.

What he’s trying to do
Working to move EMHS from a fee for service to a value based (population health) reimbursement platform through the implementation of a standard system wide care management structure, as well as a reduction of the total spend for the patient, while improving quality and patient satisfaction. Entering into risk based contracts, based on a population health foundation with various payers/employers. Expanding through Beacon Health, the network of non-EMHS providers utilizing population health principals.
