James M. Walker, MD, FACP

James M. Walker, M.D. is an internationally recognized lecturer, consultant, and thought leader in the fields of electronic healthcare record (EHR) development and usability and safety. He is presently the Chief Medical Information Officer of the Geisinger Health System in central Pennsylvania, where he leads Geisinger's development of integrated outpatient, inpatient, and patient EHRs. With Frank Richards, he leads a $1.5 million AHRQ grant for creating a regional healthcare information network in rural Pennsylvania. He practices internal medicine and has published numerous journal articles and a widely used book, Implementing an Electronic Health Record System in Kathryn J. Hannah and Marion J. Ball's Health Informatics Series (Springer-Verlag, 2005).

In addition to leading the development of the Central Penn Healthcare Information Collaborative (a regional healthcare-information exchange), he has been active in the organizing meetings of the Pennsylvania e-Health Initiative, serving on the Strategy Committee. He has provided briefings to the Pennsylvania House Health Policy Committee and numerous Pennsylvania legislators, as well as to the National Health Policy Forum, the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics, and MedPAC. He serves on the Biomedical Library and Informatics Review Committee of the National Library of Medicine, the Clinical Advisory Group of the National Alliance for Health Information Technology, and the Medical Informatics Subcommittee of the American College of Physicians.

Walker received his MD degree from the University of Pennsylvania before training in internal medicine at the Penn State Medical Center. He completed a National Library of Medicine fellowship in medical informatics.

Geisinger Health System is an integrated, physician-led healthcare services organization that serves two million residents throughout central and northeastern Pennsylvania. It includes a 650-member multi-specialty physician practice, a tertiary/quaternary medical center and an acute-care community hospital, adult and pediatric trauma centers, a nationally acclaimed alcohol and chemical dependency treatment center, a health-services research center, 41 community-practice offices, and an HMO.
