The World Congress Leadership Summit on Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) will convene providers and other stakeholders to discuss strategies for integrating and participating in an Accountable Care Organization framework on a local level that offers shared savings payments for improving the quality of care and costs.

The Keys to a Successful Model
How to Get from Here to There?

The ACO model presents a path for reform that builds on current provider referral patterns and offers shared savings payments to providers willing to be held accountable for quality and costs. It relies upon three major principles:
  • Local accountability: Discuss legislative groundwork and what ACOs can do to change the health care delivery system
  • Shared savings: Distribution of cost-savings that result from more efficiently delivered care and methods of distribution
  • Performance measurement: Assess progress toward aligning the "medical home" model and patient shared decision-making

Panel Discussion: Community-Based Accountability of Care: Defining Characteristics of an ACO and
How Your Business Model Needs to Change

In a 2009 Issue Brief the American Medical Group Association suggested five different ACO models. The multi-specialty group practice, hospital medical staff organization, physician hospital organization (PHO), interdependent physician organization, and health planprovider organization or network. How an ACO is structured reflects the characteristics of a market. This session will explore:
  • What models exist for provider contracting with government and private health plans?
  • How do you know your organization is ready to develop this infrastructure? Checklist for readiness.
  • What are the reimbursement models, including a discussion of episode-based, bundled payments and PCP capitation?
  • What are the key metrics and understanding actuarial calculations for health care premiums and bending the trend?
