Attending HIMSS? Not attending HIMSS?
Hear HIMSS perspectives at the World Congress Leadership Summit on Leveraging the Stimulus Funding to Accelerate EHR Adoption!
Lessons Learned from a HIMSS Stage 7 Hospital:
Implementing an EHR to Engage Patients and Families
to Improve the Management of their Health Care
Examine the underlying infrastructure and data required to support a patient portal
- Techniques on how to provide patients and families with timely access to data,
knowledge and tools so they can make informed decisions
- An example can be: Provide patients with an electronic copy of their health information as well as electronic access (including lab results, problem list, medication lists, allergies) upon request
- How to design two alternative methods for providing clinical summaries for patients on each encounter - and/or general medical history

Achieving Stage 7 The Beginning of a Transformative Journey from the Perspective of an Academic Medical Center
Stanford Hospital and Clinics recently completed its four-year implementation of an
integrated, enterprise-wide electronic health record, culminating in the achievement of EMR Adoption Stage 7, the highest level of technology adoption as defined by HIMSS Analytics. The transformation was more than just replacement of systems and automation of processes it was an exercise in cultural integration which achieved a clarity of purpose unique in the recent history of the organization. Though it was known that work would remain, and continue, after the implementation period, expectations for system optimization and realization of benefits exceeded the initial capacity. Building the controls for high throughput system optimization, increasing user efficiencies, and aligning priorities with enterprise goals and objectives remains an ongoing priority.
The speakers will describe the SHC project, including overall strategy and decisions
related to timeline, sequencing, leadership structure, communication, and change
management, as well as methodology and structure for post-implementation request prioritization, demand management, throughput, governance, strategic planning, and organizational alignment. The presentation will focus on the unique approaches which did and did not work well in the setting of a complex academic medical center.
- Examine the components of EMR Adoption Model Stage 7 and the approaches used to achieve component goals
- Weigh the pros and cons of specific project planning and execution approaches with their implications for a complex academic organization
- Gain an understanding of the expectations for post-implementation demand related to system and user optimization, strategic planning, and governance, and define strategies to meet this demand
