MIDA (Medical In-Field Diagnostic Assistant)
Presenter: Mr. Alexander Albertine, Program Manager, MIDA International

MIDA (Medical In-Field Diagnostic Assistant) is an automated tool that utilizes existing SMS (Short Message Service) text messaging technology to support medical information dissemination and the collection of public health data for underserved populations in developing countries. Through a dialog of text messages between a centralized server and an in-field healthcare worker’s mobile phone, MIDA provides free diagnostic assistance directly into the hands of those that need it most. By optimizing current mobile technology, MIDA provides a low-cost, sustainable, and expandable solution to problems arising from under-trained healthcare personnel, limited specialist knowledge in the field, and inefficient data collection systems. In developing countries, training healthcare professionals and developing medical infrastructure can take many years, if not decades, to acquire, fund, and distribute to all underserved areas. MIDA addresses these problems by establishing a centralized data-hub with search, inquiry, and response capabilities, which can be securely stored as an electronic medical record and accessed via SMS-text by healthcare professionals to retrieve diagnostic information. By harnessing SMS and current data-server technologies, MIDA transforms simple, easy-to-use mobile phones into powerful medical diagnostic tools without any special hardware in the field or changes to the handheld unit. Founded in 2008, MIDA’s team of program managers and partners bring expert capabilities in international development, project management, and public health in their efforts to develop the tool. Supported in part by the Johns Hopkins University School for Advanced International Studies (SAIS), MIDA International is currently looking for new trial locations and partners.
