"Car Part" Incubator: An Innovative Solution
Presenter:
Ms. Aya Caldwell, CIMIT Global Health Initiative
Four million babies die annually in their first month of life; 98% of these deaths occur in poor countries. Existing medical care facilities in these countries often lack the necessary resources. For example, 95% of medical equipment in poor countries is donated and non-functional within five years. Neonatal incubators are no exception to this dilemma. CIMIT Global Health Initiative (GHI) and Design that Matters (DTM) developed a “Car Part” incubator as an alternative to these donated devices. The “Car Part” incubator functions as a neonatal incubator, warming table, and blanket warmer. Automotive parts, available throughout the world, are capable of being repurposed to produce heat, light, air, convection, a power reservoir, and auditory and visual alarms. The incubator incorporates human design factors such as a detachable base and ergonomic handles for mobility without elevators. It also promotes user-stimulated maintenance; air filters are visible to users and headlights are intuitive to fix. By emphasizing locally produced materials, we eliminate dependences on imports, simplify the maintenance process, and stimulate the local economy. Our goal is to price the incubator at around $1,000 or 3% the cost of the current top-of-the-line incubator in America. We will explore options for product implementation and commercialization by developing regional commercial partnerships and by working with local governments. The implementation of the incubator must be integrated with targeted training. By building partnerships with hospitals and health care providers, we will be receiving continuous feedback to determine device improvements and catalyzing improved clinical skills.
