Envirofit Clean Cookstoves - Sustainability & Scale
Presenter:
Ron Bills, CEO and Chairman, Envirofit International
According to the World Health Organization, nearly 3 billion people worldwide cook their daily meals indoors over fires fueled by wood, animal dung or crop waste. The majority of these indoor cooking fires do not achieve clean combustion, resulting in tremendous heat loss and the release of toxic substances, such as carbon monoxide, benzene, and formaldehyde. The cumulative effect of this Indoor Air Pollution is estimated to kill 1.6 million people worldwide annually, greater than the number of malarial global deaths. Because of extended exposure in the home, 85% of those killed are women and children under the age of five. US-based non-profit Envirofit International has designed a line of clean burning, affordable biomass cookstoves that significantly reduce toxic emissions and use readily available biomass fuel sources. The cookstoves are a result of more than five years of research, emissions and durability testing with Colorado State University’s world-renowned Engines and Energy Conversion Laboratory. Compared to traditional cooking methods, Envirofit cookstoves reduce toxic emissions by ~80%, use ~50% less fuel and reduce cooking cycle time by ~40%. Available microfinance and time- and cost-savings make Envirofit cookstoves a smart, accessible purchase, while providing economic and health returns for our customers. Envirofit’s innovative enterprise-based model reinvests profits from stove sales to make the business self-sustaining and scalable. Since May 2008, Envirofit has already sold ~50,000 cookstoves in southern India. Envirofit International and its partner the Shell Foundation have a goal of selling 10 million stoves worldwide in the next five years.
