LifeSpring Hospitals

An Innovative and Affordable Business Model: LifeSpring Hospitals is an expanding chain of hospitals that provide high quality maternal health care to lower-income women in India. LifeSpring is a 50-50 equity partnership between Hindustan Latex (HLL) and the Acumen Fund. LifeSpring fills the void of high quality maternal and child health care at affordable rates for India’s lower income population. Charging between 30-50 percent of prevailing market rates, LifeSpring’s business model ensures swift scale-up and financial sustainability without use of grants. From its current six hospitals, LifeSpring will have 30 across India by 2010 and nearly 150 by 2012. Clear Focus: Drawn to higher quality services than resource-constrained government hospitals provide, large segments of the poor avail services from private sector providers, often needing to borrow money or sell assets to do so. In this context, LifeSpring Hospitals focuses on providing high quality maternal care at an affordable price for lower-income families. LifeSpring’s customer base is the bottom 60% of the Indian population (B60) who have a household income of Rs. 3000 – Rs. 7000 per month (~$2 - $5 USD/day). Lifespring Hospitals’ services include: antenatal care, postnatal care, deliveries (normal and caesarean), and family planning services. Measurable: LifeSpring is extremely focused on metrics and continuous improvement. Its first hospital in Moula Ali, Hyderabad is ISO 9001:2000 certified. Since inception in December 2005, over 2000 births have been delivered in LifeSpring’s flagship hospital in Hyderabad. Across all six LifeSpring Hospitals, there have been over 50,000 outpatient and inpatient cases to date.
