Health Children - Renascer

Health Children - Renascer is a not-for-profit organization that is transforming health care for people living in poor conditions in Brazil. In the last 17 years, its innovation, efficiency and effectiveness have successfully reduced childhood diseases and lifted families out of extreme poverty throughout the country. Renascer has a comprehensive way to provide health care. We work beyond hospitals’ walls, since diseases in most of developing countries are just the tip of the iceberg. Behind that there are more deep and structural problems regarding poor people’s social and economic conditions. Renascer assists ill child and their entire family — holistically. The Organization’s key strategy for restructuring families is developing a specifically-tailored Family Action Plan that addresses needs in five crucial areas: Health, housing, income generation, education, and citizenship. Renascer serves families for approximately two years—during which they are provided with extensive assistance. To ensure that families are indeed breaking the cycle of poverty, illness, and suffering, they are monitored and evaluated periodically and do not graduate from Renascer until they meet set high goals. Results of the work are reduction of 68% in days of patients’ hospitalization, reduction of Public Hospital Costs around US$ 3 million per year and an increase of 48% on household income. In addition, Renascer has been replicated near other 24 public hospitals across Brazil and its methodology has been successfully implemented into local governments' social protection policy. In the words of Prof. Muhammad Yunus: “Renascer has created a powerful methodology of social inclusion for the very poor".
