Low-cost SPRD

Critical vaccines that travel to the most remote regions of the world are often subjected to excessive conditions during transportation that can threaten vaccine potency and effectiveness. Some of the thermostable products under development are dry powders which require reconstitution prior to injection. Unfortunately, the cumbersome reconstitution process coupled with poor training often leads to non-immunization or injection of a toxic dose that result in death. Furthermore, reconstitution in multi-dose vials often results in wasted vaccine which leads to a very high cost per-delivered dose. For reconstitution of vaccines to become more safe and economical, the process of reconstitution must be simple and eliminate the adverse events and wastage. Introduction of vaccines in low cost, single-dose, pre-filled, reconstitution devices (SPRD’s) can reduce adverse events and wastage. Commercially available SPRD’s are expensive, have large storage volumes, and are cumbersome to operate and therefore do not comply well with low resources settings needs. AktivPak, in collaboration with PATH and HarroHofliger GMBH have developed an SPRD which addresses affordability, acceptability and availability for low resources settings. Immunoject is a card-like SPRD which is very low cost, has few components and requires few steps for use. In a recent user assessment in Hyderabad, India, the device had a high acceptability. Current R&D efforts are evaluating the stability of vaccine placebo in the alpha prototype and a beta prototype is under development.
