Electrochemical Arsenic Remediation for Rural Asia
Presenter: Susan Addy, Postdoctoral Scholar, University of California, Berkeley

Arsenic in drinking water is a major public health problem threatening the lives of over 100 million people worldwide. The dispersed rural population of South Asia is too poor to afford many of the arsenic remediation techniques that become low-cost only on large scales. On the other hand, many low cost point-of-use methods are inadequate for the high concentrations in the region and/or require high maintenance resulting in low acceptability by the public. ElectroChemical Arsenic Remediation (ECAR) is a technology that overcomes many of the obstacles of current practices and can be used affordably and on a small-scale, allowing for rapid dissemination into rural areas to address this arsenic crisis. We have optimized electrochemical remediation as a water treatment to obtain extremely lost-cost, low-maintenance, and low-waste arsenic removal in the complex groundwater environment of Bangladesh and West Bengal, India - two of the areas hardest hit by the arsenic crisis. We present findings that ECAR can mitigate arsenic concentrations to below the WHO limit of 10 ppb in synthetic arsenic-contaminated groundwater as well as real groundwater from Bangladesh. We will also present the feasibility of ECAR deployment in a community water center, capable of selling affordable clean water for ~US 2.5ยข per person per day with full cost recovery, assuming the price of electricity for a small off-grid supply.
