The CFWclinics Franchise Network
Presenter:
Mr. Greg Starbird, COO, HealthStore Foundation
According to the World Health Organization, nearly 30,000 children under the age of five die each day; many of these children would survive if only they had access to high-quality medicine, basic healthcare, and disease prevention services. The HealthStore Foundation® (“HealthStore”) was organized to apply lessons learned from the franchise industry to increase access to essential drugs, basic healthcare, and prevention services. From SUBWAY, to ExxonMobil, to Marriott Hotels, the franchise business model has proven to be the most effective way to mass distribute goods and services where standards matter. Since 2000, HealthStore has developed a network of 85 for-profit franchised medical clinics and drug shops in Kenya and Rwanda, under the Child and Family Wellness brand (“CFW”). The CFW network served over 500,000 people in 2008. HealthStore is continuing to improve and grow its current networks as well as preparing to expand the CFW branded franchise system to more countries in the developing world. In order to achieve its long-term mission of a self-sustaining system of independently owned franchised healthcare clinics, HealthStore is restructuring operations in Kenya and Rwanda into a Nairobi-based for-profit corporation; this will allow HealthStore to take advantage of emerging world of social venture capital. HealthStore’s CEO is the former VP for Sub-Saharan Africa for GlaxoSmithKline and has 29 years of experience developing and managing health related businesses in Africa. HealthStore’s board of directors includes world-class global health experts as well as some of the world's top franchise industry leaders.
