Social Marketing and Franchising for a Better Life

Janani’s mandate is to identify persons with unmet need for family planning and provide them with appropriate services. In case of contraceptive failure back it up with comprehensive abortion care. Operating in two most impoverished states of India, Bihar and Jharkhand, Janani evolved from a traditional social marketing program to an innovative fractional social franchising model which has provided protection to over 12.5 million couples in the last 10 years. Janani provides affordable spacing and limiting family planning methods through its three inter-linked networks of clinics, rural centres and pharmacies in the private sector at an average cost of $2.94 per couple. The network consists of – 40 own clinics and 104 franchisees branded as Surya Clinics 7,500 rural centers – networked as Surya Health Promoters for counselling, provision of non-clinical contraceptives and referrals 5,000 rural and 25,000 urban pharmacies Janani also is a major partner of the government under their Contraceptive Social Marketing Program and the National Rural Health Mission. It plays a pivotal role in service delivery at their facilities and training of providers. Pioneering the Manual Vacuum Aspiration in the provision of first trimester abortion, the organization has now introduced the Medical Abortion and Emergency Contraceptive pills. Janani’s clinic in the state capital of Bihar, Patna is a government approved training centre for family planning and comprehensive abortion care. The Indian Council of Medical Research utilizes this facility for clinical trials. Continuous communication initiatives of Janani provide the essential support towards popularizing these services among the people.
