Rapid Healthcare Diagnostics Network - D.Scope
Presenter: Dr. Daniel Niclas, CSO, D-Rev

Several tropical diseases including malaria and tuberculosis continue to plague the developing world due to limitations in diagnosis and lack of proper treatments. Both of these diseases can be diagnosed accurately by microscopic examination; however, the current cost, size, complexity and fragility of the requisite microscopes impede their widespread use in the developing world. The D.Scope developed by D-REV affords an ultra-low cost solution to the drawbacks of the traditional diagnostic microscope, while enabling rapid, accurate diagnostics and treatment in rural and field environments. The D.Scope is one of three essential components of our Rapid Healthcare Diagnostics Network (RHDN) program specifically designed to develop a bottoms-up healthcare infrastructure in rural underdeveloped areas. Two other key components include (1) a Web-based application for mobile devices that captures and consolidates patient data, including microscopic images, and (2) a telemedicine network enabling rural health clinic (RHC) workers to manage records/images, and to exchange patient data with, and obtain diagnostic assistance from, experts at leading, centralized healthcare facilities. A series of field trials in Bangladesh are proposed to measure the effectiveness of our RHDN program. The D.Scope is in its fifth iteration, supports fluorescence microscopy, recharges via solar power, and is ready for trials. Twenty of these units have been manufactured and two are currently in use at Stanford’s Medical School in the Department of Clinical Microbiology. Our proposed trials will confirm the ability to conduct accurate, rapid and low cost diagnostics in the field.
