At a time when technology advances are changing the way the world communicates, many healthcare institutions are struggling under the weight of antiquated business processes that are highly manual, with little integrated IT system support. In many cases healthcare providers spend more time filling in forms or searching for patient related information than on actual patient care. Security officers in healthcare are often challenged to address risks in business and information system processes without the necessary IT tools. Information system projects that seek to increase productivity through automation of workflow face a high barrier-to-entry due to lack of interoperability between information systems coupled with strict regulatory requirements.

Advocate Health Care has been pursuing a network transformation to an Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) infrastructure to help automate internal processes, to provide consistent security policy enforcement and to create a mechanism for extending managed services to their broader business ecosystem. In this presentation, Advocate Health Care will present the results of a joint project with Alcatel-Lucent to improve workflows at Advocate using web services deployed on an SOA backbone to enforce policy conformance and to demonstrate compliance with data privacy legislation while reducing the total cost of ownership for information systems and helping to improve patient care.
